One reason football is so popular is that it can be played anywhere any time is one form or another. Over the decades, individual forms of the game have developed, often out of local traditions or influenced by the weather.
The ultimate example of this is futsal. Indoor football is enjoying a boom and has a growing following of young and female fans. A few years ago, FIFA took the logical step of establishing a World Championship for this five-a-side version of the game. Since those early days and the first FIFA Futsal World Championship in Holland in 1989, futsal has gone from strength to strength, as the fourth tournament in Guatemala in 2000 proved beyond all doubt. The fifth FIFA World Futsal Championship takes place in Taipei in 2004.
Futsal is pure football: pace, skill, teamwork and high drama characterise the indoor game. FIFA is confident that with further refinement of the laws and other adaptations, futsal's popularity will continue to grow.
